Elly recently relocated to Vancouver from London, U.K. where she spent two and a half years working at The Climate Group on the RE100 campaign, convincing the world’s largest brands to transition to 100% renewable power. Elly has a MSc in Global Energy and Climate Policy and a BSc in Biological Sciences (with Zoology). At Canopy, Elly’s work focuses on brand engagement for the CanopyStyle and Pack4Good initiatives.
More about me
I’ve wanted to be an environmentalist ever since I was around ten years old and learned about the destruction of the Amazon rainforest during a school assembly. From that moment, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life’s work towards the protection of our planet’s ecosystems.
I studied Zoology at the University of Birmingham and was fortunate to spend six weeks on a South African game reserve as part of my final year thesis, assessing the habitat’s carrying capacity in relation to elephants.
After university, I spent just under a year working as an Assistant Ecologist in the U.K., carrying out habitat and protected species surveys as part of development applications. My desire to have an even greater impact led me to study energy and climate policy at SOAS University in London and thereafter I joined The Climate Group.
I’m really excited to be part of Canopy’s work to protect the world’s forests, to help unlock solutions to unsustainable business operations and to catalyze action from the marketplace.
Why forests are important to me
Forests are what connects every living organism on our planet through the provision of oxygen, nutrients, and habitat, to name just a few of the ecoservices they provide. I think we take their importance for granted, but I believe people are becoming more aware of the need for their protection globally.
I believe forests are one of the most powerful natural technologies we have as a solution to the climate crisis.
Why Canopy
Canopy is composed of a small group of dedicated, passionate and hard-working individuals who are truly making a difference. I’m inspired by what the organization has achieved so far and admire the quirkiness and fun that makes Canopy unique.
Ask me about
David Attenborough, elephants, vegan cooking, ballet and music festivals. Oh, and trees!
What ruffles my feathers
All talk and little action. Commitments mean nothing without implementation. This is what excites me about Canopy — our work is truly making a difference on the ground.
“The Elephant” - never forgets special moments, family is important, female-led, always eating, loves a bath.
