HOT BUTTON REPORT
The Hot Button assesses MMCF producers’ forest sourcing and their leadership in Next Gen production — and points to other important data needed for informed purchasing, including producers’ traceability initiatives, the use of FSC-certified fibre, and support for conservation solutions.
Canopy’s mission is to protect the world’s most vital forests. The Hot Button Report does not evaluate land rights, water and energy use, health and safety, labour practices, or equity. We encourage our brand and producer partners to seek additional resources on these critical issues beyond Canopy’s expertise.

The 2024 Hot Button Report reveals encouraging strides and critical areas for growth in the MMCF sector, with 97.5% of global production now represented. This year, 71% of rated producers earned green, partial dark green or dark green shirts, reflecting industry-wide progress. While green shirt production held steady at 53%, industry consolidation and capacity growth by red shirt producers underscore the need for continued work to eliminate sourcing from Ancient & Endangered Forests and for accelerated adoption of Next Gen fibres.
More informations
As we work with our brand and producer partners to protect the world’s most vital forests, we encourage them to seek additional resources to address other critical issues that fall outside Canopy’s scope and expertise. This includes working with other specialized NGOs that are coordinating with governments and local organizations to make meaningful change and have the necessary expertise on issues ranging from land rights, water and energy use, health and safety, working conditions, labour practices, and equity and discrimination, among others. In addressing these risks, we encourage our brand and producer partners to:
- Work with relevant third-party auditors.
- Contract independent methods of inquiry and assessment.
- Work with credible NGO partners in the field of concern.
- Insert contract conditions for suppliers to provide assurances.
- If unable to credibly assess, consider suspension of contracts until the issue is addressed.
We also encourage our brand and producer partners to monitor regulatory systems in countries that are relevant to their markets, as we note that some countries have adopted new regulations recently that may affect import and export compliance.
