Neil is a leading expert in biodiversity conservation, with over two decades of experience in the NGO sector leading research projects worldwide. His work has informed decision-making at various policy forums, ranging from corporate to United Nations settings. At Canopy, he drives a diverse research portfolio that delivers the data and evidence needed to develop practical solutions for protecting biodiverse, carbon-rich forests and transforming unsustainable supply chains.
More about me
I hold a PhD in Conservation Biology and have been a Research Associate at the University of Oxford for over a decade, co-authoring more than 100 scientific articles along the way. My work sits at the intersection of academia and advocacy, driven by a commitment to making evidence-based change happen at a systems level.
My journey has taken me from living alongside communities on the front lines of forest conservation in some of the world's most biodiverse and threatened regions, from Madagascar to the Amazon. These experiences have shaped my perspective on the challenges we face and how, together, we can overcome them.
I’ve also been fortunate to be part of exciting scientific discoveries — from documenting species previously unknown to science to capturing the first images of elusive animals in their natural habitats. These moments have reinforced my determination to develop innovative, practical solutions to help protect our remaining biodiverse, carbon-rich forests.
Why forests are important to me
Forests are the lungs of our planet, providing vital ecosystem services essential to our collective survival. But to me, protecting forests is about more than just self-preservation; it’s also about recognizing their intrinsic value and the richness they bring to our world. Teeming with life, they provide critical habitats for countless species — many of which remain little understood or appreciated. Sacrificing these irreplaceable wild spaces for short-term economic gains is unacceptable, especially when sustainable alternatives exist.
Why Canopy
I was drawn to Canopy because of its unwavering commitment to innovative, results-oriented solutions that make a real difference. I admire the way Canopy not only identifies urgent challenges but also builds collaborative partnerships to implement solutions that transform unsustainable practices. It’s an exciting place to put research into action, and I’m proud to be part of the team.
Ask me about
Applying evidence-based strategies to forest conservation and transforming supply chains for lasting sustainability. Especially if you’re a researcher working on cutting-edge innovations that could be game changers — I’m always keen to share insights and explore new ideas.
And if you're up for it, let’s swap campfire stories about forest adventures and wildlife photography — there’s nothing like sharing tales from the wild!
What ruffles my feathers
Ignoring evidence-based solutions when the knowledge and tools to make a difference are right in front of us. It’s frustrating to watch opportunities for progress slip away due to complacency or a lack of appetite for change.
Foxes are curious, wily, and tenacious — alert to their surroundings and quick to seize opportunities. They move through diverse environments with dexterity and ingenuity, solving challenges that others might overlook.
As a researcher, I strive to embody these traits — approaching problems with insight and creativity while staying adaptable and resourceful. I’m always prepared to navigate unexpected challenges and explore new paths of discovery.
