EPD Criteria

Criteria for inclusion in the EcoPaper Database is based on the Paper Steps, developed with and endorsed by the Environmental Paper Network. Paper Steps rankings are based on broad summaries from leading robust and transparent life cycle analyses. The impact of specific papers may vary based on variations in fibre sourcing, manufacturing and production practices.

The EPD only includes paper and packaging grades that are category leaders. For example, there are so many copy papers available made with 100% recycled or non-wood content that we do not include copy paper with 30% recycled regardless of government or regional purchasing guidance.

For bamboo products to be included they must be FSC certified.

‘Not Ranked’ products are missing information such as details on fibre blends and/or bleaching. Please see ‘Notes’ on the second page of each listing for more details.

We recommend all companies with products made with non-wood agricultural wastes and fibres obtain RSB certification.

Products excluded from the EPD are:

  • Food contact products known to have PFAS.
  • Products with known invasive non-wood feedstock, such as water hyacinth or Arundo donax.
  • Bamboo products that are not FSC-certified.
  • Stone paper. Our research suggests it can't be recycled in existing paper recycling streams and would contaminate the system.
  • 100% pure cotton products due to the chemical and water intensive nature of growing cotton. We have only included cotton linters or recycled cotton textiles or rags.
