Risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests
Audit Required
Until the company successfully completes the CanopyStyle Audit and its results are made publicly available, Weifang may have risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests and other controversial areas.
The inclusion of red in a producer’s shirt rating — be it partially red or completely red — indicates risk of sourcing from high-carbon and high-biodiversity forests.
Areas where the company is showing leadership
Weifang has engaged in dialogue with Canopy, and made efforts in summer 2023 to update its forest policy. In 2024 it published the policy, as well as its list of suppliers.
Key Improvements Required
- Initiate an independent third-party CanopyStyle Audit to verify progress in implementing its Wood and Pulp Sourcing Policy.
- Use ForestMapper and complementary guidance documents to ensure that all current and any new suppliers are not sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests.
- Following auditing, Weifang can address any sourcing issues that are identified and progress on remaining sustainability steps, such as supporting conservation solutions and driving the use of Next Generation fibres.
Facilities
Weifang produces nonwovens, standard viscose fibres, and rayon with some viscose filament and owns one viscose mill in Weifang City, Shandong, China, with production capacity of 200,000 tonnes.
