Risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests

No Known High Risk

Tangshan Sanyou completed and released the results of their third CanopyStyle Audit in September 2023. The company has many suppliers, but has reduced potential risks, and is working with a key supplier to encourage them to get verified.

Areas where the company is showing leadership

  • Conducted its third CanopyStyle Audit.
  • Has increased its procurement of FSC Mixed fibre inputs in 2024.
  • Has traceability systems in place for its products to allow customers to track from MMCF fibre to garment.
  • Has called on signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to develop the regulatory mechanisms necessary to ensure that the Convention’s goals for nature protection are prioritized.
  • Has reached out to local conservation organizations to support their projects.
  • Commercial production of viscose staple fibre made from 30–50% post-consumer recycled cotton textiles called Revisco (used with both Sodra Once More and  CIRCULOSE®).
  • Publicly announced its intention to scale-up Revisco to 200,000 tonnes pending brand demand. Has retrofitted its production line to allow for the production of more Next Generation fibre. Actively promotes its collaboration with Canopy and the use of Next Gen fibres.
  • Sanyou contributed to a sign-on letter calling for governments to support enabling conditions for the scale up of Next Generation Solutions.

Key Improvements Required

  • Continue to invest in research and development efforts to develop and significantly scale the use of Next Generation Solutions in order to reduce impacts on forests.
  • Continue to procure higher volumes of FSC 100% or FSC Mix certified inputs from sources that have achieved FSC Forest Management certification on the ground.

Facilities

Tangshan Sanyou produces a viscose staple fibre made from 30–50% post-consumer recycled content dissolving pulp called ReVisco. This product was the first MMCF containing post-consumer recycled textiles.

The Tangshan Sanyou Group Company Limited produces man-made cellulosic fibre and nonwovens. Tangshan Sanyou facilities are located in Caofeidian District, Tangshan, Hebei Province, China. Sanyou’s MMCF contains a small portion of non-forest-based raw materials that are not assessed by the CanopyStyle Audit, such as bamboo sourced from China.

Together these mills have a combined viscose staple fibre capacity of 800,000 tonnes and lyocell capacity of 8,000 tonnes.

All VSF facilities have been registered on the ZDHC platform and has been assessed at the progressive level in all the three criteria related to chemical management: chemical recovery, wastewater discharge, and air emissions.
