Financing A Systemic Solution for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation:

High-Calibre Panel to Discuss Novel Material Substitution Solution to Unsustainable Use of Forests in Paper, Packaging and Textiles

CALI, COLOMBIA, Oct 22 – Canopy and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are co-hosting a high-caliber panel discussion on how financing the transformation of unsustainable paper, packaging and viscose supply chains can unlock major conservation gains for forests and biodiversity. The panel will be held at the Convention of Biological Diversity (COP16) in Cali, Colombia.

This event will highlight the economic and environmental opportunities of Next Gen materials, which are often derived from sources that are currently burned or landfilled, such as agricultural residues and clothing waste, to reduce demand for wood pulp and boost forest conservation.

Over 5 billion trees are cut down every year for paper, packaging and fashion fabrics, deepening the growing deforestation and forest degradation crisis and threatening the world’s most vital and biodiverse ecosystems, like the Amazon rainforest and Boreal forests. Next Gen substitution is fundamental to systemically alleviating the pressure on forests - and is akin to scaling renewables to transform fossil fuel-dependent energy systems.

WHO: Featured experts will include representatives from IUCN, Canopy as well as fashion, investment and government leaders.

WHAT: In-person panel

WHERE: IUCN Pavilion (Blue Zone) at the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) in Cali, Colombia

WHEN: Sunday, October 27, 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM
