Toronto, ON – January 27, 2016 Canopy, an award-winning environmental not-for-profit organization, is delighted with Cineplex Entertainment’s leadership in working to ensure a brighter future for the world’s endangered forests and species.
Now in effect, the text pages of Cineplex Magazine and Le Magazine Cineplex are made of 100 per cent recycled paper (with 85 per cent post-consumer content). The magazines are printed on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). The text pages also meet the high standard required to carry Canopy’s Ancient Forest Friendly (AFF™) logo.
For each issue, Cineplex prints 750,000 copies of the English magazine and 200,000 copies of the French magazine. Cineplex Magazine was recently named the #1 most read magazine for all demographics under the age of 50 and the #2 most read magazine in Canada overall, according to reporting by Vividata. The publications are distributed in Cineplex’s 162 theatres across Canada, and also in The Globe and Mail and Le Journal de Montreal .
According to the Environmental Paper Network’s Paper Calculator, by using 100 per cent recycled paper for the text pages of Cineplex Magazine , 21,572 trees will not be used annually in the text pages of the magazines.
The magazine’s conversion is just the latest step Cineplex has taken to reduce its environmental footprint.
- Cineplex has introduced a comprehensive purchasing policy to shift away from endangered forest fibre and towards sustainable solutions
- All Cineplex popcorn bags have been created from FSC certified paper since 2010
- Cineplex office papers are now 100 per cent post-consumer recycled
- Cardboard combo trays in theatres are made of 40 per cent post-consumer recycled fibre
- Most drink cups are currently made with FSC certified fibre
“Cineplex’s leadership on lower footprint paper sources and the magazine’s switch to Ancient Forest Friendly paper is another strong step forward in the company’s commitment to helping safeguard the world’s endangered forests,” said Nicole Rycroft, Canopy founder and Executive Director. “It’s an excellent performance, worthy of a big round of applause.”
