More Choices, Lower Environmental Impact

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 25, 2025 – Businesses looking to cut their environmental footprint have a powerful new tool at their fingertips. Today, Canopy proudly unveils the updated, redesigned, and expanded EcoPaper Database — ‌the world’s largest collection of recycled and Next Gen paper and packaging solutions. With 1,400+ products, this free, one-stop resource is designed to help companies source smarter, low-impact products and accelerate the transition away from forest-based fibre. Next Gen, unlike conventional paper products that rely on forest fibre, utilize feedstocks such as agricultural waste or food waste to create new paper.

“Forests don’t belong in landfills, and they certainly don’t belong in single-use packaging,” said Nicole Rycroft, Executive Director of Canopy. “The updated EcoPaper Database highlights the incredible growth in low-carbon Next Gen alternatives and high-recycled-content papers. It’s a trend that is sure to continue as companies – and suppliers - race to build supply chain resiliency and meet regulations like the EU Deforestation Regulation.”

This comprehensive upgrade makes the EcoPaper Database more robust and user-friendly than ever. Key updates include:

  • 1,400 low-impact paper and packaging listings, a 19% increase in available products.
  • 531 new listings for 2025.
  • 984 products made from 100% recycled content, reducing reliance on virgin fibre.
  • 461 products incorporating cutting edge Next Gen fibres, such as:
    • Agricultural residues: Wheat straw, sugarcane bagasse, flax, non-GMO sugar beet residue.
    • Food waste: Papers made from grape waste, banana fibre, and even mushrooms.
    • Surprising innovations: Paper made from elephant poo, fallen leaves, miscanthus grass, and more.
  • Food Safe certification screening.
  • PFAS screening in food service ware, helping companies avoid ‘forever chemicals’ in food-safe packaging.
  • New recyclability certification links, providing additional transparency for Next Gen fibre products.

“At HH Global, we’re committed to accelerating the shift to Next Gen solutions that reduce pressure on forests and the climate,” said Kevin Dunckley, Chief Sustainability Officer of HH Global, a leading print solutions provider for thousands of large global companies. “That’s why we’re thrilled to see the updated EcoPaper Database from Canopy — an invaluable resource that helps us source smarter, scale innovation, and meet our sustainability commitments.”

Each year, more than three billion trees are cut down to produce paper packaging and fabric, many from climate-critical Ancient and Endangered Forests. With growing regulatory pressure, evolving consumer expectations, and urgent climate and biodiversity crises, companies are facing unprecedented demand for circular and low-impact alternatives.

‘We have a big goal to be new forest fibre free across our products and packaging. Canopy's database was the first place we started researching innovators. It has given us excellent insight into options for sampling and boosted our hopes to reduce our impact on the world's forest,” said Kellie Dalton, Head of Regeneration at interiors and lifestyle brand, House of Hackney.

The EcoPaper Database is more than just a list‌ — ‌it’s a roadmap for businesses to build resiliency and shift to low-carbon, low-impact, and circular alternatives. By making these solutions easier to find and adopt, Canopy is helping companies future-proof their supply chains and drive meaningful impact at scale.
