A tribute to Alice Munro

We are sad to hear about the passing of literary icon and a good friend of forests, Alice Munro.
She was also a great friend of Canopy. In 2001, Alice literally stopped the presses on the printing of her much-anticipated book, Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage when she found out the environmental impact of printing that book on virgin paper. Her publisher graciously waited two weeks for 100% post-consumer recycled paper to arrive in order to print that collection on it.
Alice also agreed to do a special edition book run of 2012’s Dear Life, her final original book, on paper made partly from wheat straw – a Next Gen alternative to paper made from trees.
Alice Munro was beloved by readers and other writers alike, and venerated among fans of short fiction. She was awarded the Man Booker Prize, the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Giller Prize – twice!, and in 2013, the Nobel Prize for Literature. She has been called “the writer living today who is most likely to be read in 100 years” by The Atlantic.
Alice was a fantastic champion of the planet and Canopy’s work. We are honoured to have known her, and blessed to have her legacy and incredible body of work to keep her insightful, radical, knowing spirit with us always.
