Risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests

Audit Required

Until the company successfully completes the CanopyStyle Audit and its results are made publicly available, Shandong Yamei may have risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests and other controversial areas.

The inclusion of red in a producer’s shirt rating — be it partially red or completely red – indicates risk of sourcing from high-carbon and high-biodiversity forests.

Areas where the company is showing leadership

Yamei re-engaged with Canopy in 2023; the company participated in a CanopyStyle Audit training in 2023 and contacted auditing firms. However, since then, the company has not agreed to further meetings with Canopy, or to conduct a CanopyStyle Audit.

Key Improvements Required

  • Conduct a CanopyStyle Audit to verify suppliers and confirm risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests and other controversial sources.
  • Use ForestMapper and complementary guidance documents to ensure that all current and any new suppliers are not sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests.
  • Following auditing, Shandong Yamei can then address any sourcing issues that are identified and progress on remaining sustainability steps, such as supporting conservation solutions and driving the use of Next Generation fibres.

Facilities

Shandong Yamei produces viscose and rayon fibres and nonwovens with one viscose mill, in Binzhou, Shandong Province, China, at a capacity of around 320,000 tonnes per year.
