Saving Forests Is In Fashion This Fall

Friday, September 27, 2024 – Today, Nicole Rycroft, Founder and Executive Director of solutions-driven not-for-profit Canopy, was named one of The BoF 500. The BoF 500 is an index of the most influential people in the global fashion industry, as curated by the editors of The Business of Fashion.

Nicole is being recognized for leading Canopy’s work in catalyzing and advancing the fashion industry’s transition to and scaling of low-carbon, circular, Next Gen materials — alternatives to the conventional ‘take-make-waste’ supply chain.

Every year, 300 million trees are logged to make fabrics like viscose, rayon, modal, and acetate. Canopy works with global fashion brands, producers, and innovators to move raw material sourcing away from Ancient and Endangered Forests, and scale-up low-carbon, circular solutions that work for business and the planet.

“I’m thrilled to be among such illustrious company in this year’s BoF 500,” said Rycroft. “I’m equally happy that what has landed me here is Canopy’s work to move viscose textiles out of the world’s vital forests and to Next Gen alternatives. It indicates to me that keeping forests standing, scaling solutions, and closing the fashion loop has become a core aspiration of the fashion community. Now let’s prove, together, that style doesn’t have to cost the Earth.”

Nicole Rycroft’s previous honours include UBS Global Visionary, an Ashoka Fellow,  the Canadian Environment Award Gold Medal, the Climate Breakthrough Award 2020, the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada, and the Global Australian Award.
