GLOBAL EXPANSION OF CANOPY’S ECOPAPER DATABASE RESULTS IN RECORD NUMBER OF LISTINGS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 25, 2020. As more companies search for ways to minimize their impact on the Earth’s resources, and meet market demand for more sustainable paper and packaging, Canopy is thrilled to release the updated EcoPaper Database for 2020.

The new EPD, updated for the first time since 2017, features more than 850 listings, and is newly global in scope, now including products from Europe and Asia, as well as North America. Highly rated products include printing and writing grade papers, office stationery, and packaging made with 100% or other high recycled content, or with agricultural residue/alternative fibre. “At Kontoor, sustainability and responsibility influences everything we do, from sourcing materials and designing products to how we package those items,” said Roian Atwood, Senior Director of Global Sustainable Business at Kontoor Brands, Inc. “The EcoPaper Database simplifies the process of finding the most environmentally-friendly paper and packing products. With this update, Canopy has yet again expanded the portfolio of tools to aid in sustainable sourcing decisions.”

What’s new in this year’s EcoPaper Database?
  • The 2020 EcoPaper Database features 515 new listings with a total of 856 paper, packaging and pulp entries.
  • It is the most comprehensive listing of alternative fibre pulp and papers, with more than 255 Next Generation options included.
  • This update includes 257 packaging products, a considerably larger selection than any previous EPD.
  • For the first time, it’s global in scope, with an option to search by regional availability.
  • Additional focus has been given to a range of packaging and alternative fibre grades available in Europe and Asia.
  • It lists alternative fibre pulp to help our brand partners looking for pulp suppliers globally. Alternative fibre options include wheat straw, bamboo, sugarcane bagasse, and various agricultural residues, as well as an increase in products with recycled content.
“We are thrilled to provide this key go-to resource for companies wanting to reduce their impacts on high carbon and biodiverse forests by sourcing eco-friendly packaging and papers,” said Nicole Rycroft, Canopy’s Executive Director. “With 2030 climate targets fast approaching, it is heartening to see so many more recycled and Next Generation products on this year’s list.”

“As a publisher and distributor of children’s books, we are dedicated to responsible stewardship of the environment in all of our paper procurement practices,” said Lisa Serra, Senior Director, Paper Procurement and Compliance from Scholastic Inc. “Canopy’s latest EcoPaper Database is easy-to-use and will surely be an indispensable tool to any business looking for support in achieving sustainability goals.”

The 2020 EcoPaper Database shows that it is getting easier for businesses and consumers to source environmental paper and packaging options. Market demand for tangible environmental solutions is growing rapidly and this year’s EcoPaper Database shows just how quickly supply is expanding to meet customer needs.

As in previous years, the EcoPaper Database is fully interactive and features detailed information on each product and company. The database is supported by the Environmental Paper Network .
