Fashion isn’t just about trends; it’s about responsibility, accountability, and change. That’s why Canopy is proud to support the Fashion Act, a forward-thinking legislative proposal aimed at transforming the apparel industry’s impact on people and the planet.

What is the Fashion Act?

The Fashion Act, officially known as the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, sets out to revolutionize the way the fashion industry does business. If passed, this legislation will establish enforceable environmental standards for ‌fashion companies operating in New York state, marking a significant step forward in the journey toward sustainability and social responsibility.

Here’s what the Fashion Act entails:

  1. Supply Chain Transparency: Companies with global revenues exceeding 100 million USD will be required to map their supply chains, from raw materials to production facilities. This transparency will shine a much-needed light on the often opaque practices within the fashion industry.
  2. Accountability: Once supply chains are disclosed, companies must address adverse impacts on the environment. From reducing carbon emissions to managing chemicals, accountability will become the new norm.
  3. Mandatory Due Diligence: The Fashion Act introduces a Mandatory Due Diligence Framework, compelling companies to identify, prevent, mitigate, and remediate negative impacts stemming from their operations and supply chains. Non-compliance could result in fines of up to 2% of annual revenues.

Why Does Canopy Stand Behind the Fashion Act?

For Canopy, supporting the Fashion Act isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about driving real change. Here’s why we’re on board:

  1. Shared Commitment to Sustainability: The Fashion Act aligns with Canopy’s mission to transform unsustainable supply chains into models of sustainability. By setting common objectives, we can collectively propel the industry towards a greener, fairer future.
  2. Transparency and Accountability: Transparency breeds accountability. By requiring companies to publicly disclose their sustainability data, the Fashion Act seeks to empower consumers and businesses to make informed choices.
  3. Catalyst for Innovation: The Fashion Act’s ambitious goals surrounding greenhouse gas reduction, chemical, and water usage promise to push companies toward true sustainability and will incentivize the sector to integrate more circular, Next Gen materials, made from sources like recycled textiles and agricultural residues, into their value chains. Next Gen materials have a demonstrably lower impact on our climate, forests, and biodiversity than conventional feedstocks, and can help companies realize our shared vision for circular fashion!
