Eddie Bauer, Valija Gitana, GUESS? and American Eagle Outfitters, Inc.  mark Earth Day with CanopyStyle commitments

Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, San Juan, Seattle, Vancouver. April 23, 2019. To celebrate Earth Day, Canopy is pleased to announce the addition of four new global fashion and apparel brands to the CanopyStyle initiative. With today’s additions of outdoor brand Eddie Bauer, US clothing brand and retailer GUESS?, Puerto Rico-based, boho-chic brand Valija Gitana and global specialty retailer AEO Inc.’s brands American Eagle and Aerie, the CanopyStyle initiative now has more than 175 participating fashion and apparel brands. These companies represent more than 250 billion USD in market share. All are committed to ending the use of Ancient and Endangered Forest fibre in their viscose fabrics by 2020, to developing alternative, next generation sourcing solutions, and helping advance large-scale conservation of Landscapes of Hope such as Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem and Canada’s Boreal Forests.

“As a brand born in the Pacific Northwest, the conservation and restoration of our forests is at the center of our mission and will continue to be,” says Damien Huang, President of Eddie Bauer. “We’re proud to commit to the CanopyStyle initiative and aim to inspire other retailers to end the use of endangered forest fibres in their fabrics.”

“We welcome these new companies to CanopyStyle. Their purchasing influence and supply chain engagement will lend strong additional momentum to shifting the viscose supply chain out of Ancient and Endangered Forests once and for all,” says Nicole Rycroft, Canopy Founder and Executive Director. “Brands are increasingly supporting viscose producer leadership and mitigating their own supply chain risks by sourcing only from “green shirt” producers. That’s fantastic news for species large and small!”

This announcement is made in the lead up to the CanopyStyle Summit in China this coming June, which will convene multinational retailers looking to join the initiative, dozens of CanopyStyle brands, fibre innovators and viscose producers.

As the 2020 timeline to eliminate sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests approaches, brands are looking to producers to advance their CanopyStyle commitments and take the actions necessary to improve their “shirt colour” and ranking as identified in the 2018 HotButtonreport. Twenty-eight percent of global viscose production, including Lenzing, Aditya Birla and Enka, are currently ranked with “green shirts” in the Hot Button and have been verified at low risk of sourcing from high carbon and high biodiversity landscapes through the CanopyStyle Audits.

Canopy and its brands partners expect that at least 80 percent of the global viscose supply will have undergone the CanopyStyle Audits by 2020 with more than half attaining “green shirts” to meet their customers’ requirements around low risk, forest conservation and next generation solution fabric development.
