can be a real opportunity for nature, if governments take action now","\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">It’s been a hard year for planet Earth. We are seeing parts of the California coastline slide into the sea, and forest fires ravage landscapes from Portugal to Canada to Indonesia. People — including so many children, from New York City to Delhi to Singapore — have been choking on smoke from the fires, while droughts and water shortages impact crops and food security.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Wildlife is suffering from all of these phenomena alongside us humans, and for some, these additional challenges are an almost insurmountable burden. More than 49,500 species globally are currently threatened with extinction, which, despite the best efforts of many, is an increase from 2025.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">And yet, there is always hope. This week, the 196 signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity will gather in Armenia for COP 17. This year’s agenda is “Taking Action for Nature” and the big question is: Will they? Will our governments take the action nature so desperately needs?\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Let’s remember that the signatories to the CBD have already committed to deliver “30 x 30”:  the landmark goal of protecting at least 30 per cent of the world’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems globally by 2030 and, in addition, to restoring at least an additional 30 per cent of ecosystems that have been degraded. 30 x 30 also reminds us that nature is not a “nice to have” — it’s essential. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Maintaining the Earth’s diversity of species keeps ecosystems stable and resilient, better able to withstand extreme climate events and sustain life on our planet.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Accordingly, the ambitious 30 x 30 goal was accompanied by a commitment to fund these protection and restoration efforts, since the CBD also recognised that the world currently has a US $700 billion annual gap in biodiversity funding. By 2030, we need to mobilize at least $200 billion per year in new funding, plus reduce or reform harmful incentives and subsidies by at least $500 billion per year. By doing both, we can close this gap.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The numbers are formidable, and I’m sure can sound disheartening to some. But this month, over \u003Ca href=\"https://www.businessfornature.org/resources/open-letter-reform-incentives\">130 global businesses\u003C/a> and financial institutions, including Unilever, H&M Group, BNP Parabas Asset Management, and Rabobank, called on governments to take on the task of reforming harmful subsidies within the next 12 months. This could include eliminating subsidies that enable destructive logging, illegal fishing, or fossil fuel expansion: in short, any subsidy that, as a byproduct, harms biodiversity. In the joint letter released just ahead of CBD COP 17, they wrote:\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>“\u003C/strong>\u003C/em>\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Crucially, this is not about finding new money but maximizing the value of existing public finance by changing what it rewards. Countries that have started this work show that reform is both possible and effective when it is carefully phased, designed with producers, and implemented in ways that protect livelihoods and support communities through the transition.\u003C/strong>\u003C/em>\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>”\u003C/strong>\u003C/em>\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The key message is \"maximising the value of existing public finance by changing what it rewards.” Of course we do need to mobilise new money as well — but it feels right to firstly redirect and reform the finances that are hindering our ability to provide a liveable planet. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Similar to the words of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, surely a primary aim must be to first “do no harm.” \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Once we make even the smallest start on reforming perverse subsidies that damage our planet, governments, as well as businesses and society at large, can collaborate further on mobilizing the additional capital needed to safeguard the extraordinary wealth of species our planet is home to. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Our collective efforts need not be in vain, and there is already evidence that we can reverse the extinction trend. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">This year, for the first time ever, the status of the endangered Green sea turtle’s level of threat was cited as of “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List — a significant shift from its previous status as Endangered. There are still some local populations of green turtle that remain at risk, so the work to protect and sustain the turtle population has to continue — but this bounceback in green turtle populations is worth celebrating. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">Moving from the ocean to the forest, the number of tigers in the wild is also on the rise. Between 2010 and 2026, global wild tiger populations increased from 3,200 individuals to around 5,700 — almost a 70 per cent increase in tigers across the 13 range states in which tigers were being monitored. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">The resurgence of both the turtle and the tiger is a result of sustained, coordinated international conservation efforts, community-led habitat management, and anti-poaching measures.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">More success stories are highly possible, so long as governments, businesses, financial institutions, and civil society elevate our collective efforts to protect and restore critical habitats like intact ancient forests and coral reefs. Eliminating $500 billion in destructive subsidies will be a substantive and laudable contribution. \u003C/p>\n\u003Cp dir=\"ltr\">To all parties of the CBD, we wish you well in your deliberations and hope you land on the right side of history.
