Metro is FSC certified: Metro Montreal becomes the first daily newspaper in North America to ensure it is printed on FSC paper. The company also adopted a global environmental policy.
June 27, 2011 - Metro Montreal
Starting Monday, the Metro Montreal newspaper is printed on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Montreal Metro is also taking a leading position in the Canadian newspaper industry by adopting an environmental policy, in collaboration with the conservation organization non-profit Canopy.
With this policy, Metro will commit to not source paper with fiber from ancient and endangered forests, to reduce its carbon footprint, to stimulate the actions of environmental protection in the newspaper industry and to support forward-thinking conservation initiatives such as the Agreement on the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement.
"As a society, we need to supply wood fiber more responsibly, avoiding fiber from endangered forests and other forests with high conservation value – these forests are the lungs of our planet," said Tara Sawatsky, Corporate Campaiger for Canopy.
"We are proud to be the first in North America to ensure that we print our newspaper every day on FSC certified paper, said Daniel Barbeau, the publisher of Metro Montreal. We hope that other publishers will follow our example."
