For Immediate Release

February 13, 2009, Toronto - Nicole Rycroft, executive director of environmental publishing advocates Markets Initiative, was recognized as an environmental innovator yesterday at the fourth annual Print Action awards as the brainchild behind wheat paper in Canada.

The 'Wheat Sheet' was produced last year by a North American mill and the paper - which looks and feels like a high-grade magazine sheet - was used in Canadian Geographic's June 2008 issue. That publication marked the first time wheat straw waste was used in North American publishing.

The 'Wheat Sheet' also won the Most Progressive Environmental Printing project with Dollco Printing, the Ottawa-based printer of the Wheat Sheet project.

'There's no reason paper has to be made from forests,' said Rycroft, who spearheaded the development of Canada's first wheat sheet several years ago and brought multiple partners together including Canadian Geographic, Alberta Research Council, New Page and Dollco Printers to ensure success.? 'I believe wheat straw waste and other agricultural residues are the future of paper in much of Canada and a key way to keep our forests standing and our climate stable.'

Last night's award was Rycroft's second 'Environmental Innovator' award. Award sponsors included Sustainable Forestry Initiative and Canada Post.
