New Straw Copy Paper Available In Canada
That's right, now you can choose straw paper for all of your own printing needs.
It's produced by our friends at Prairie Pulp & Paper Inc. and contains 80% leftover straw and 20% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood fibre. That's eighty per cent less forest fibre than traditional papers!
It's an excellent step forward in our campaign to kick-start the straw paper industry in North America.
The new paper picks up on the momentum and appetite we established with our straw paper book (Margaret Atwood) and magazine (Canadian Geographic) trials, and gives us all a chance to support a new straw paper industry that protects forests.
Here's how our Camapaign Director, Amanda Carr, puts it.
“Our market survey continues to quantify a clear and growing demand from large paper customers for paper made from leftover straw. Now we’re excited because shoppers like you and I can pick up Step Forward Paper™ and support a straw paper industry in North America, a key to protecting our endangered ancient forests.”
Jeff Golfman is the President of Prairie Pulp & Paper Inc. He supports Canopy's vision for a North American straw paper industry. He explains, “Step Forward Paper™is the first paper of its kind to hit shelves in North America, and the first step toward meeting more of our paper needs from straw instead of ancient forests.”
Step Forward is presently made at a facility in India. “Our goal is to establish a market that will support our plans to build a new state-of-the-art facility in the Canadian prairies, which will in turn enable us to produce this straw paper with an even smaller footprint,” says Golfman.
As for quality and price, Step Forward Paper compares to traditional papers on both. "Paper made from leftover straw produces high quality and performance that compares with other copy and printer papers," says Pete Gibel, Vice President of Merchandising at Staples Canada, Pete Gibel. "It’s an easy and cost-effective way for consumers and small businesses to conserve our world’s forests without sacrificing quality.”
