China
The Chinese paper and forest products sector is the second largest in global production and consumption.
Between 1989 and 2004, China's aggregate consumption of paper and paperboard has grown almost 10% each year, from 14.6 million tones to 48.0 million tones. Domestic production of paper and paperboard has grown at a similar rate to consumption, expanding from 13.7 million tones in 1990 to 43.0 million tones in 2003.
By 2010, paper fibre demand in China is expected to grow to 68.5 million tonnes.
China is quickly becoming the key print center for book publishers around the world.
Legislation in China often fails to protect the air, water and land affected by mills and logging. There is also concern about the inadequate protection of human health and worker safety associated with these industries.
