Canopy supports funding dedicated to developing new agricultural residue eco-paper

As the environmental organization behind the development of the Wheat Sheet, Canopy supports the recent $400,000 investment announcement from the governments of Canada and Manitoba to support the research and development of high quality, eco-friendly paper made from agricultural crop by-products, including wheat.

Some of Canopy’s leading signatory companies helped make this possible by providing input on test sheets we distributed last year.

These funds will allow Prairie Pulp and Paper (PPP), the company in the process of developing a new paper made from wheat straw residue, to produce up to 200,000 sheets of paper for further testing with potential customers.

PPP estimates it will take $600 million dollars to build the commercial scale agricultural residue paper mill in rural Manitoba, and the company already has secured financial support from the likes of Woody Harrelson.

Canopy estimates about 18 million tons of wheat straw is available annually in the Canadian Prairies – most of which is currently burned. Collecting this fiber for papermaking can revolutionize the paper industry and drastically reduce its carbon footprint.

Domtar to Youth: Don't think, just print!

Domtar recently launched a campaign asking youth to print more. In the face of climate change and species decline, the company's message makes us wonder just how much they understand today's environmental realities.

Perhaps Domtar’s new campaign isn't worth the paper it's wasting.
