How We Use Your Money

Since our humble beginnings in 1999, with a $6,000.00 budget, to our $800,000 + budget for 2011, Canopy has pursued a financial growth strategy that is strategic, bold and responsible.

As an independent, non-profit organization working to protect the world's forests, species and climate by collaboratively engaging the business community and public to create a sustainable and innovative paper supply chain, Canopy is supported by private foundations, individuals and corporations.

Canopy creates and builds strong and trusting relationships with all of our financial stakeholders, evident through our long-standing support by foundation partners, active monthly giving and major donor programs. Additionally, Canopy is grateful for the financial gifts that we receive through point of sale as well as the non-financial contributions provided as gifts-in-kind. As a small organization with limited paid staff capacity, Canopy nurtures volunteer and intern contributions to gain the time, skills and passion of many others who support our mission.

One of Canopy’s core values is integrity. Financially, we are prudent and lean. We work diligently to live the values that we espouse, to garner the respect of the marketplace so that we get the best outcome from all our spending.

Canopy is a not-for-profit organization registered in British Columbia and New York State. Canopy works in partnership Tides Canada Initiatives Society to fulfill our charitable goals. In the United States, our charitable partner is the Tides Foundation. TCI and Tides Foundation are registered charities that incubate and develop partnerships with non-profits to support charitable projects and programs.
